History

Benihana was established as a restaurant in the year 1964. It was founded through Hiroaki “Rocky” Aoki in New York City. Rocky made use of his earnings working on an ice-cream truck in order to establish the restaurant. 

Through cautious expansion, Benihana expanded to 11 restaurants until 1983. Between 1983 and 1997, Benihana expanded to 47 locations. Following several ownership changes, at the end of 2012 Angelo, Gordon & Co.

bought Benihana and made it a privately-owned company. Today, there are more than 70 Benihana locations and corporate headquarters located in Miami, Florida.
