Del Taco History

Hackbarth and Jameson soon joined Dick Naugle, and they founded Red-E-Food Systems, Inc. in order to franchise Del Taco. The chain grew throughout Southern California. Dick Naugle, the founder of the company, left in the early 1970s. The company was renamed Red-E-Food Systems and became Del Taco, Inc. The business grew rapidly.

Jameson and Hackbarth purchased the store in 1976 from investors. W.R Grace and Company then bought the rights to the Del Taco name throughout the U.S. In 1978, the establishment had 100 restaurants. The menu expanded to include more items like the bun taco, quesadilla, and ice cream sundaes. 

Del Taco was merged into the Naugles restaurant chain in 1988. Dick Naugle, who had founded the Naugles’ restaurant chains in the 1970s, was the founder. The merger enabled the chain to expand in size and geographical reach. The restaurant was also allowed to remain open until midnight.

In order to improve customer service and promote the brand’s image, the establishment launched a number of initiatives. The new logo and restaurant designs were part of these initiatives. After W. R. Grace and Company gave up its exclusive rights to the company’s name, the company was able to expand beyond California. 

The company opened new locations in Las Vegas, Nevada, and St. Louis, Missouri. In 2008, the establishment had doubled its size and opened its 500 ^th location. The restaurant was also reopened in Texas, Georgia and expanded to Colorado and the Pacific Northwest.

Del Taco declared bankruptcy in 1993. Del Taco was in severe financial trouble due to high-cost leases and a three-million-dollar lawsuit by a former supplier. Between 1994 and 1998, the company experienced fluctuations in its size. By December 1998, the restaurant was down to 325 locations. 

The establishment was purchased by Sagittarius Brands, LLC in 2004. The company now has 500 restaurants. Levy Acquisition Corporation bought the company on June 30, 2015. On that date, the establishment was made public. The chain is present in many locations across the United States, but mainly in the Western Region.
