Long John History

The story of the Long John Silver’s has been tainted by management changes and franchise tensions. The company’s roots go back to the first restaurant situated in Shelbyville, Kentucky, created in 1929. 

The stand was founded by Late Jerome Lederer, found success in spite of the recession. In 1946 the late Mr. Lederer founded Jerrico Inc. and created an establishment called Five and Dime.

Herr. Lederer hired Warren W. Rosenthal as his manager. He had been introduced to his manager Mr. Rosenthal while he rented out one of Mr. Lederer’s rooms during college. Rosenthal was the first who came up with the concept of a fast-food seafood restaurant. He took the time to study the competition, including that of the H. Salt Fish and Chips chain.

The result of his research was the creation of Long John Silver’s. The name was in reference to the pirate-themed adventure Treasure island. There were 621 restaurants inaugurated by the end of June in 1976. 

The business continued to expand up to the point that Bankruptcy forced it to close the chain’s helplessness. Triarc Companies, Inc. attempted to purchase the franchise with the cash value of $75 million and $450 million of assumed debt The deal, however, failed.

Credit Suisse First Boston, the largest debtor, and investor in the bankruptcy franchise-owned approximately 80 percent of the business. They effectively controlled the chain. Then, A&W purchased the business for $227.5. A&W was at the time under the control of Yorkshire Global Restaurants, and later joined YUM! Brands in March 2002. The franchise is still controlled by the company.
